Why Your CE Credits Aren't Showing in FinPro

The six reasons completed credits may not appear in FinPro, starting with the most common one.

Written by Vladimir Kouznetsov, EA, CFP®

Overview

You completed your courses, but your FinPro record does not show the credits you expected. This article walks through the causes in order of how often they actually occur, so you can identify yours quickly.

Start with the first one. It is by far the most common, it looks exactly like a missing-credit problem, and in almost every case nothing is wrong at all — your credits were applied, just to a different year than the one you were looking at.

Do not skip the last one. Cause 6 is the only one on this page where credits really are missing and you still owe them. It is easy to miss, because the total number of credits you completed looks correct — they are simply split the wrong way between the two categories.

Cause 1: Your Credits Were Applied to a Previous Year's Deficiency

This is the most common reason advisers do not see their credits, and it is the first thing to check.

Under the NASAA IAR CE rules, FINRA applies newly reported credits to your oldest outstanding deficiency first. If you were short on credits in any earlier year, the courses you complete now are used to close that older gap before anything is credited to the current year.

So if you finished 12 credits this year and your current year still shows a shortfall, look at the previous year in your FinPro CE record. You will very often find your credits sitting there, correctly reported and correctly applied — closing out a deficiency you may not have known you had.

How to check

  • Log in to your FinPro account

  • Open your CE record / CE history

  • Review each year, not just the current one — start with the earliest year showing a deficiency

  • Compare against the completion dates on your Adviser CE certificates

Why we cannot change this

The order in which credits are applied is set by the NASAA IAR CE rules and carried out by FINRA. Adviser CE reports each completion accurately, with its course number, credit category, and completion date — but we have no control over which year FINRA applies a credit to, and we cannot ask for a credit to be moved to a different year. Neither can your firm.

What it means for you

If your credits went to a prior year, you have not lost anything, but you may still owe credits for the current year. Work out your remaining shortfall from your FinPro record and complete the difference — and remember the two halves are tracked separately, so check Ethics & Professional Responsibility and Products & Practices individually. See Choosing the Right CE Bundle.

Cause 2: The Course Isn't Actually Complete Yet

A course is reported only once every lesson in it is complete — not when you pass the final assessment.

The usual culprit is the Course Survey, which sits in the Conclusion chapter immediately before the Final Assessment, so it is easy to skip past on the way to the exam. Passing the exam does not backfill it. An unsubmitted module quiz has the same effect.

Sign in, reopen the course, and look through the curriculum for any lesson not marked complete. See Completing Your Course.

This also explains partial bundle totals: credits are reported per course, not per bundle, so a 12-credit bundle showing only 6 credits usually means some of its courses have an unfinished lesson.

Cause 3: A Name or CRD Mismatch Caused FINRA to Reject the Submission

Your first name, last name, and personal CRD number on your Adviser CE profile must match your FINRA record exactly, or the submission is rejected.

If this is the cause, we will normally have emailed you with the subject "Action Required: Profile Update Needed for IAR CE Reporting." Check your inbox — and your spam folder. See Fixing a Name or CRD Mismatch.

Cause 4: It Simply Hasn't Been Long Enough

We report completions to FINRA within 3–5 business days. FINRA then processes the report on its own timeline, which varies with their submission volume.

A course finished in late December is especially likely to appear in January, because the holiday period contains few business days. Your completion date is what counts for meeting the requirement, not the date it appears in FinPro — keep your certificate as evidence of the date.

Cause 5: You Completed More Credits Than the Year Requires, So FinPro Only Displays the First 6

The annual requirement is 6 Products & Practices credits and 6 Ethics & Professional Responsibility credits, tracked separately. FinPro displays only the credits it applied to that requirement — the first 6 in each category earned during the year. Anything beyond that is still reported by us, still received by FINRA, and still on your record; it simply is not displayed, because it was not needed to satisfy the requirement.

So if you completed 9 Products & Practices credits this year, the extra course may still be listed but with 0 credits, or with a reduced number, next to it. That is the display behaving as designed, not a reporting failure.

How to confirm

Click the information (i) icon next to the credit number. FINRA shows a note along the lines of:

You have exceeded the annual requirement for this credit type. Only the required credits are displayed.

That message is confirmation that the credits were received — the zero is a display cap, not a rejection.

What it means for you

Nothing is missing and nothing needs to be resubmitted. Do note, however, that excess credits do not carry forward — each year's requirement must be met with courses completed in that year. See Understanding IAR CE Requirements.

Cause 6: You Are Over in One Category and Short in the Other

This is the other half of Cause 5, and it is the one worth checking most carefully, because unlike every other cause on this page it means you still owe credits.

The annual requirement is not 12 credits. It is two separate requirements of 6 — 6 Products & Practices and 6 Ethics & Professional Responsibility — and credits in one cannot be used to satisfy the other. Completing 12 credits does not meet the requirement if they fall the wrong way.

Say you completed 12 credits this year, but 9 of them were Products & Practices and only 3 were Ethics & Professional Responsibility. Your record shows 6 Products & Practices — the other 3 are over the cap and hidden, exactly as described in Cause 5 — and 3 Ethics & Professional Responsibility, which is a genuine shortfall of 3. The total you completed looks right, so it is easy to read the missing 3 as a reporting problem when it is not.

How to check

  • Open your CE record in FinPro and read the two categories separately, never as a combined total

  • Confirm each one individually reaches 6 for the year

  • If a category shows more than 6 or a course sitting at 0 credits, you are over in that one — check the other category before assuming you are done

What it means for you

You need to complete the shortfall in the category that is short, and it must be a course in that category — more Products & Practices credits will not close an Ethics & Professional Responsibility gap, no matter how many you take. The excess in the other category cannot be moved across, and it does not carry into next year.

If you are unsure which courses count toward which half, see Choosing the Right CE Bundle.

Quick Checklist

Check

Where

1. Did the credits go to a previous year's deficiency?

FinPro → CE record → every year, earliest first

2. Is every lesson in the course complete, including the survey?

Adviser CE dashboard → open the course

3. Do your name and personal CRD match FINRA exactly?

Adviser CE → My Account, vs. adviserinfo.sec.gov

4. Has it been more than 5 business days, plus FINRA processing?

Your completion certificate date

5. Did you exceed 6 credits in that category this year?

FinPro → CE record → the (i) icon next to the credit number

6. Does each category separately reach 6, or are you over in one and short in the other?

FinPro → CE record → the two categories read individually

Still Not Resolved?

If you have worked through all six and your credits are still unaccounted for, contact us at [email protected] with:

  • Your personal CRD number

  • The course names and completion dates in question

  • Confirmation that you have checked prior years in FinPro

  • Your current totals in each category separately, Ethics & Professional Responsibility and Products & Practices

We can confirm exactly what we submitted and when. For anything to do with your FinPro account itself — access, or how FINRA has applied a credit — contact FINRA at https://www.finra.org/registration-exams-ce/finpro.
